Gangotri Dham, perched at an elevation of 3,100 meters in Uttarakhand’s majestic Garhwal Himalayas, is one of the four sacred shrines of the Char Dham Yatra. Dedicated to Goddess Ganga, this holy temple marks the origin of the sacred Ganga River, believed to have descended from heaven to earth at this very spot to purify the ashes of King Bhagirath’s ancestors.
The temple, built in the 18th century by a Gorkha commander, is made of white granite and stands gracefully on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. The river is known as Bhagirathi at its source and later becomes the Ganga after merging with the Alaknanda at Devprayag.
Pilgrims visit Gangotri between April/May and October/November to seek blessings and take a holy dip in the freezing waters, which is believed to wash away sins. Nearby attractions include Submerged Shivlinga, a natural rock formation visible in winter, and Tapovan, a beautiful meadow ideal for meditation.
The serene atmosphere, snow-capped peaks, and the sound of flowing water create a deeply spiritual experience. A visit to Gangotri is not just a pilgrimage but a journey of faith, purity, and inner peace.
