Yamunotri Dham, perched at an elevation of 3,293 meters in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, is the first and starting point of the sacred Char Dham Yatra. Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, this holy shrine marks the origin of the Yamuna River, one of the most revered rivers in Hinduism, believed to purify the soul and wash away sins.
The temple, built in the 19th century by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur, stands gracefully amidst breathtaking snow-capped peaks, lush green valleys, and the calming sound of flowing water. The black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna is the main attraction for devotees seeking blessings and spiritual peace.
The journey to Yamunotri involves a scenic 6-kilometer trek from Janki Chatti, which can also be covered by pony, doli, or helicopter. One of the most unique experiences here is taking a holy dip in the natural hot springs at Surya Kund, where devotees also cook rice and potatoes as an offering to the Goddess.
Nearby attractions include Divya Shila, a rock pillar worshipped before entering the temple, and the beautiful Yamuna Valley. Yamunotri remains open from April/May to October/November each year. A visit to Yamunotri is a peaceful, soul-cleansing beginning to the holy Char Dham Yatra.
